Fuel Use Rate

What have you folks been getting on fuel use rates on track, especially with the original 5.0? I'm trying to figure out what fuel load to carry for track sessions, so I need to figure out a safe use rate plus a margin to prevent starvation from pick up problems at low fill level. Any info will be of help. I have a 32 gal cell, so this is about weight and keeping fuel load fresh.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Fuel Use Rate

Last time I gaged it was about 3 miles per gallon. About the same as the POS Titan truck I got rid of.

David, Squerly,
Thanks for the info. Quite a range. Squerly, is yours a 351W or 4.6? David is yours a school 5.0 injected?

Re: Fuel Use Rate

Hi Mike,

Our WCGT (4.6L) uses 7 to 7.7 gal/hr. Bob and I have just installed a fuel gauge and sender, since we have run out of gas once. G;-)

Re: Fuel Use Rate

Bob and I pulled our fuel cell out to refurbish it. While we had the bladder out of the can, the bladder was labled NOT FOR USE WITH ALCOHOL. We are avoiding the 10% ehtanol fuels. G;-)

Re: Fuel Use Rate

5.0 injected. I try to keep my fuel level above the foam at the start of the session.

Glen, Were they talking about the car or the driver.

Re: Fuel Use Rate

We have a stick that is marked by the lb. and we dip it into the cell before and after the run.

Empty your cell out and dump in 5 gallons at a time and mark your stick into 5 cuts to denote each 6 lb gallon, add five more gallons and do it again.

Go out with a known fuel load and come back after the laps and use your stick to determine fuel burn in lbs. per lap.

We always think and calculate required fuel load in lbs. not gallons as that is how you roll over the scale.

or remove and attach a diff. hose to the fuel regulator under the hood. Then pump the tank dry using the fuel pump. than "pump down" the tank after each session! We used to use the stick method...

Re: Fuel Use Rate

a couple of great suggestions. I usually just drive around until the car starts to bog down in hard G turns :-D Kidding

I've used the stick method, works good for me.

Re: Fuel Use Rate

I agree, a 1/4" wood dowel method works nicely. Mark it in 5 gal increments. Each marking is 2 3/16" apart. 6 marks gives you 30 gal. Ends up just below the top of the tank. Tank is 90 deg box. The markings are therefore linear at those increments. Good enough for Government work!

With my 5.0 L engine at the end of a 5 x 20 min session I top it off at around 16 gals. That's around 4.8 gal per 30 min. That's consistent with David Eastman's findings.
