Use an ohm meter and check your wires look for appx. half scale. A small gap will cause a back fire when it jumps the gap.
Do a compression test on the engine a cracked spring or bent push rod will cause a back fire.
Check the timing a jumped chain will cause these types of problems.

When you run it out of gas do you mean you have to walk back and get a can or do you mean something else.

Running empty allows you to pick up dirt in the bottom of the tank. Check the filter if its hard to blow through its probably plugged. Try cleaning the idle air control valve. I think the parts store sells fluid to clean the air flow meter.
Try unplugging it and see what happens.

Re: this f@#& Ford

I once had a 92 that was gutless after going thru a rebuild on the engine I found the hamonic balancer had spun. I reajusted the timing and it came back to life. changed out the balancer and it ran great. After talking to a friend of mine about the find he said that it was uncommon to find that. He has been working on veh. for better that 30 years. He had seen it on the smaller engines but not so much on the 5.0 hope this helps
