Pearl is a special addative thats added to paints from the factory or you can actual buy different colors of pearls and add them to any paint. Its kinda hard to explane, you've seen the new Cadillac Excalade's haven't you, well the white ones are pearl white but there are tons of different colors of pearls not just white. Thats the best way I can explane it.

Well, are you doing this yourself? I haven't really messed with pearls too much but I'm pretty sure you can't just spray pearl, you have to mix it with a base. Plus you can't paint blue over black, you can never paint a lighter color over a darker color cause it won't show up. You'll have to paint the car black, tape off your flames and but a white or silver base down first then go over it with the blue pearl "mixed with the base"

Pearls are simple. basically, its just a reflection color. like you can look at a car and it looks white, but if you look at it at a certain angle, (depending on how much pearl is on it), you then see a (place color here) hue to the white. some people like A LOT of pearl so you can see it right off the bat. im going to do a light platinum peal on my car when i re-paint it. though im mixing my pearl with a clearcoat, then another coat of regualy clear over that. this is the way i was taught to spray it. though if you do TO MUCH pearl, then it will just mirror, thus that all you'll see is the pearl. also, there is this new product that just recently came out that helps suspend the pearl when you shoot it, kinda like when you lay down the basecoat, it dries just a fast as that, so it has enough time to flow, then dry, and not flow out of control to where it might sag or run or model. just depends on your method of painting. also, you can do blue over black, it'll help with the ghost flames. most ghost flames you see are either the same color as the base, or pretty damn close, cause you want them somewhat there...but are they? its all relatively easy.

pearla acually isn't mixed into the base coat paint of the car. (that would be a flake) it's mixed in (or already in) the clear coat. and you don't really need to put a lighter color on the car to make ghost flames. you can just put on the pearl and it will show up only when you get at the right angle. add a lighter color to see it all the time.
:edit: just read all of duatones post and he got most of it covered

Ok I made a mistake about not painting lighter colors on darker colors sort of. You can do it but you won't see it very well, but it will give you the ghost look your looking for. As far as not having pearls in base is a BS, there are a ton of bases with pearl in them, you can use pearls in base's or add it to the clear, but as far as I know you can't just paint straight pearl. There's nothing to make is stick, its just like adding metal flake pretty much, you can buy paints with flake in them or add them to the clear both ways will work. Good luck with the paint

This is an interesting topic because I am almost done w/ my car... all I need to do now is repaint the car before I go back to school. I was thinking about keeping the stock color... kinda. See... I want to go w/ a color like Charcoal Flint Metallic.... but I want to add platinum pearl over it so it shines back silver in the sunlight. I don't know how well this will turn out... anybody seen a color like this before? I'm curious because the charcoal color looks almost black... except for where the sun shines back at you... looks kinda gray/silver. Do you think it will turn out good or should I just not bother w/ the pearl? I would like to add the pearl... but if it doesn't show, what's the point? Feel me?

Here is my car: ![]() Notice how my car looks black... but on the rear quarter panel and C-pillar where the sun shines off of it, it looks more silver colored? That's an example of what pearl does. I have to go but I will show you a picture of my friends S14 Silvia later... it is yellow w/ gold pearl. |
