96 bronco runs at idle, but wont run under acceleration

ive got a 96 bronco 5.0 will run at idle but when i accelerate will be like i shut the key off. already changed the fuel filter, and have good fuel pressure. I can find no shorts in the ignition.
im thinking of a bad relay somewhere but am unsure. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Re: 96 bronco runs at idle, but wont run under acceleration

Is this a fuel injected engine ?

When you said it dies when accelerating. Is that in gear or Park/Neutral ?

Is the idle rough or smooth ?

What were the fuel pressure readings ?

Re: 96 bronco runs at idle, but wont run under acceleration

its the stock 5.0 fuel injected motor, now it will run for maybe 5 seconds at idle and then turn off like you turn the key off. even if i rev it up still within 5 seconds it will die. runs smooth the whole time. checked the coil, cap and rotor. all seems fine. im thinking maybe a crank sesor or something along those lines but i am still unsure.

Re: 96 bronco runs at idle, but wont run under acceleration

Well here is a list of possibilities:

1. IAC valve, check & clean.

2. TFI module, (The module on the side of the distributor).

3. Stator pick-up coil. The distributor has to be removed in order to test the pick-up coil and TFI module.

4. Remote possibility MAF sensor. Testing the MAF requires either a scanner or Ford Break-Out box.

Can you hook up a fuel pressuree gage to it to see what the fuel pressure is doing when it dies ?

If you plan on testing the TFI module and stator let me know and I can PM you the test procedures.

Re: 96 bronco runs at idle, but wont run under acceleration

turns out that it was the mass airflow sensor. turns out that a small piece of debris was caught in the small hole in the MAF and broke the contacts inside. i just unplugged it and it runs fine now. thanks for the help. greatly appreciated.
