01 sportage busted timing belt

01 Sportage DOHC 114,000 miles...I thought I ran out of gas one day as I was driving and the engine quit. I walked to the gas station got some gas filled it up and it still wouldnt start. I couldnt hear the fuel pump so I changed the relay and the pump, still wouldnt start. I started to search online when I found this site. After reading through quite a bit of threads I was prompted to check the timing belt. Bingo you guys were right, the timing belt had busted. However, after I pulled the belt off I realized none of the pulleys are spinning. Do I have some major damage here (bent valves maybe)? After all after I changed the fuel pump and relay I tried to crank the engine several dozen times.

What do you mean by pulleys spinning?

Form what I have been reading on another forum for Kia the sportage engine is a non-interfernce engine meaning that there should not be any damage from a broken belt.

I would install a new belt and give it a try. You should be able to turn the camshafts to line up cam gear to install belt.

My source says it is a interference engine. The parts house you get the timing belt from should be able to tell you for certain.

Are you going to do the install or have a shop do it ?

If you are doing the install do you have a manual for the vehicle because you will need one or I can PM you the procedure.

It is a 2.0 L DOHC correct ?

After the install if the engine does run I would recommend doing a compression test on the cyclinders to insure that no damage has occured to the valves.

If you are doing it yourself I would put the belt on and start it without putting on all the covers and such just to see if runs and do a compression test also like discnik suggested.

Once you have registered (FREE) go to the left hand side of page there is a section I believe its called Technical Information and click on the word SHOP, this will get you to page where you select your vehicle, then year and engine.

You could also remove the valve cover to see if there is any broken compotents on the upper end of the head.

THis engine (the DOHC) is definitely not an interference engine. THere are dozens of cases that got just stranded in the middle of nowhere with a broken belt, towed the car, put a new belt, and here you go, period.

According to NAPA's timing belt and replacement manual 2002 AND the Chilton's shop manual (thanks to disnik info), AND the rockauto.com listing, the 2.0 L DOHC engine is a interference engine ;..... well , I have not tested it myself, but the non-interference assumption is borrowed from the hands on experience that might be trusted in these posts:

I asked the kia dealer here...said it was non-interference; In any case, I plan not to test the fate...I will change my belt ahead of due time, to be sure....

Back to business..: YOU shold be able to rotate the cams by the pulleys, of course, but that requires some effort. However, there have also been some cases of seized camshaft journals....by lack of lubrication or loss of cooling due to blown head gasket....so, you have to clear off the issue....

Changed the timing belt, turned the key and she started. Works fine now. It was a little tricky lining up the camshaft pulleys and putting on the belt at the same time. I checked with the dealer and it is in fact a non interference engine and the fact that there wasn't any damage is proof. Thanks to everyone for your inputs. You guys saved me alot of money.
