92 Grand Caravan 3.3 fuel pump question

92 Grand Caravan 3.3

I have an interminent problem with the fuel pump which at times it dosn't work. i had problem looked at and they verified that it was indeed the fuel pump. I would like to do the job myself but i have one question i have almost a full tank of gas and would live to know if there is anyway i can overide and make the fuel pump run and pump fuel out of the tank. i plan on disconnecting the hose from the fuel filter and putting on longer hose and putting the fuel in gas container. I tried siphoning it out but that didn't go too well.

I did a fuel pump on a 95 voyager 3.3 and there was a syphon hose on gas tank itself clipped to the seam nesr the top of tank. You will have to raise the vehicle to find it.

Use some PB Blaster on the bolts holding the tank straps on. If the clip that holds the nut to the frame breaks and turns get yourself a saber saw (electric hack saw) and cut the bolt.

Good Luck

Re: 92 Grand Caravan 3.3 fuel pump question

I also have a 92 with 3.3. My pump went out about a month ago with a full tank of course. You will need to get vehicle up pretty high. Tires on top of cinder blocks should be good enough. First spray the mounting bolts with PB Blaster as mentioned.
Now looking to front from rear a little to left of center you will find a plastic tube with a rubber cap and clamp, this is your purge line. Get 4 five gallon cans to put your gas into. Then get a hose to attach to the purge line (3/8" ? ) Get a couple feet of it so you have hose to play with. I attached the hose to the purge line and gave it a quick suck to start the siphon. (carefull this will leave the everlasting aftertaste you will never forget and California probably says it causes cancer). This is a slow siphon process, but it will make the job so much easier with an empty tank. I was unable to remove the filler tube so I just loosened whatever I could to give me the play that I needed on the filler tube to get the job done. (removed screws from inside the fuel door, also lower the parking brake block just under the filler tube.) I was able to get the job done without totally removbing the tank but it was hanging down just enough to do the job. Use a small jack with a board between tank and jack when lowering and raising your tank so you don't cave your tank in, that will cause more problems.
Once tank is down there will be a locking ring on top of pump assembly. This ring will need to be tapped in a counter clockwise direction. Watch for locking clips also that will prevent it from turning. Use a brass drift pin if you have one to prevent any sparks. Oh and use compressed air to blow away debris before removing locking ring so you don't get any in the tank when removing pump.
The connector for the harness will be on the drivers side just behind the front door next to frame. just seperate the plug, don't remove the clip. (it will break then you will need wire ties, learn from my mistake) Make sure you don't pinch the harness above tank when reinstalling. there will be clips to keep the harness where it needs to be.

Come back and let us know how you make out,
Dave
