Strut replacement question

I just purchased a '98 SE to replace the wife's '00 Cavalier (daughter totalled it) for $1500. I took it in for a front end check due to hearing some slight popping noises. Left inner tie rod is worn and causing the noise, right inner very slight wear. No biggie there, I'm going to replace both inners and outers. The tech said the struts were OEM, so I'm going to replace all 4; with 144K miles I'm sure they're done.
Just picked up a Haynes manual, and it says to remove the knuckle assembly. Is that really required? Just want to know for sure so I can plan time accordingly.

The Haynes manual has a few omissions, which may cause you some frustration. If you are going to replace the struts, you should first test them to see if they are really worn out. Is the car bouncing when you hit bumps? Have you tried pushing up and down on each corner of the car to see if the rocking is dampened by the shock absorber of the strut? If a car were driven on smooth roads, then they may not be worn out.
The ball joints, which are pressed into the knuckles may be worn or have torn boots. The CV boots should be checked for hairline cracks.
Do a search of the forum, within the last week for the ball joints, etc.

They said the ball joints are all good. I'll have to check the struts tomorrow. If they're still OK, it'll save alot of work and $$.

The struts will probably be OK, too. I've got 165k on my '97 and mine still seem to be OK.

I talked to my cousin tonight and he has 195K on his and the struts are still OK. So I'm hopefull they'll be alright.
