Unhappy 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

Hello everyone,

Ive been reading the forums and come to relize that there are quite a few people here that have some of the same issues that I have or had.
I'm hoping that someone here can help me.

When I try to start the tahoe up it will only crank over for a second or two and the security light stays on. I've been told that the sensor that reads the key when put in ignition is not working properly and security system locks up the fuel system, as a theft deturent. I've also been told that there is a fix for this, (by bypassing sec. module un the dash) and this will fix the problem. Has anyone heard of this and is there hope for us. I've been told that this is the problem and the only way to confirm it is to take to dealer and pay them two hours of labor to run a 10 minute diognostic ($160.00) Please need help and thanks you.

Phantm6

Hey guys, sorry about that- 99 chevy Tahoe, 5.7 engine w/old body style, 4whl dr., 4dr.,
I hope this will help. Thanks again.

Re: 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

A security system failure is when the engine cranks, starts and then dies within about 2 seconds- and the security light stays on for the duration. Are these your symptons? I install remote starters on these trucks and know what happens when the remote starter bypass is inop-it is as I just described.

I have actually used remote starter bypasses wired to work at all times, on problem vehicles such as yours. That is an option, it can actually be done with a specified resistor and a relay as well. Keep in mind that this will disable your tamper proof vehicle theft deterrent when this is done.

Re: 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

Here is essentially what can be done...Just ground the wire labeled as "to ground when running from remote starter"

Re: 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

brcidd,
I had a Viper alrm system installed on my 99 tahoe this past summer(2008) about 3 weeks ago the security light started blinking and wouldn't allow me to start it. After the battery went down and I removed and charge the battery and reinstalled it, thats when the light stop blinking. Now just this past (1-31-09) saturday the light came back on....then sunday (2-1-09) I turned the switch on and held the kill switch button down to reset the alarm...it cherped once and then cherped again twice. The security light went out until later that night. When i woke this morning to go to work the security light was blinking and I couldn't start my vehicle. This is the same thing that happen three weeks ago. My question to you brcidd is will this be the same problem your talking about if the light is steady blinking? Do you think the viper system is causing the problem? Could you explain to me about the tamper proof vehicle theft deterrent. Thanx melvin98

Re: 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

Does your Viper alarm have a starter interrupter?

Does your truck merely not crank at all? if so- the starter interrupter from your alarm system is probably active--- or..

Does it crank, run for 2 seconds, then stall? if this is the failure- then the Passlock II is at play....

Re: 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

thats a dei and does have a starter kill. there should be a little black module that says dei 555L on it thats connected to the remote start and your passlock wires. unplug it and take the yellow and the yellow black and twist them together. these are the wires used to split you passlock wire which is yellow or you can just reattach that back together to itself and turn the ignition on for 20 minutes without starting it and it should reset the passlock issue. ive installed these for many years.

Re: 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

Hey guys, Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Well here it goes, here's what happened. I took my 99 tahoe to a dealer (friend of the family) and they had it for two weeks, ran all the tests, all the electrical, all the anti theft device system and reinstalled the codes. They drove and tested for a week and thought they fixed it, then told me to pick it up. When I went to pick it up "it wouldn't start", They even put in new switch. So, the next day they told me again come pick it up and I did, I drove it home and it ran fine until I turned it off and tryied to start it again and it would not. By the way this dealer didn't charge me a penny and said he wouldn't have charged anyone else either because this situation is (#$*&^#%) up.
After waiting for about an hour I started it up and it ran for about 10 min. and died, but it started right back up. While it was running I was playing around with the fuses (under the hood) and when I moved the (Black square) Fuel fuse I noticed it had a little bit of play in it. So I took it out and slightly spead apart the Five fingers on the Fuse and reinstalled it and could you believe it, I hav'nt had a problem yet. I made a few more calls and one Mechanic said that this is a common problem with GMs Fuse Box. Imagine that, I don't know if it fixed or not, but is running now. Thanks again for you help earlier and God Bless.

Re: 99 Tahoe -Security/Ignition issues

GOOD JOB. The "square box" you took out is actually the fuel pump relay and not a fuse. If you encounter this problem again I would suggest replacing the fuel pump "relay".

Thank You for posting back. It's always a pleasure to hear good news.
