if the head gaskets for the 3.1 3100 motor are not marked to let you know which side faces up towards the head how do you know the correct side?

Re: correct position of head gaskets?
What brand gaskets do you have? Usually fel-pro includes instructions inside their box letting you know how to apply their gaskets.
Most of the times its writing up, but its your call as to how you put them in.

Re: correct position of head gaskets?
T-Blake is correct. Fel-Pro branded head gaskets always go striped/printed side up. If you bought a different brand and it's not clear, call the place you bought them from, as it does matter which side is up.
