how to strip paint off resin
Hey all,
I have a resin body and want to strip all the paint off it. It has been on for about 1 week now, what is the best way to get it off without harming the resin body? Thanks Brad |

We're here to help- but do see how it is obnoxious to have to go back and ask for simple information that really should have been included in the initial question? To get a good answer, you must ask a good question. Now, would that be Testor's spray enamel, or lacquer?

Re: how to strip paint off resin
I've always thought that resin was pretty much bullet proof when using solvents, I've used pure acetone with no problems but oven cleaner works for some paints.

Re: how to strip paint off resin
I've always put the body in laquer thinner. You have to soak it for a short period of time. an hour or so. I left one overnight and it warped the body. I ordered a replacement, I never threw the warped one away and have noticed that after it dried out, it went back to normal. I wouldn't advise risking that. Oven cleaner works but is a mess and takes several coatings and washings. I did strip testors enamel from a resin body with laquer thinner (paint was a few years old) it was a pain in the A%$. But eventually came off.

Re: how to strip paint off resin
I don't know if it's just me, but I'd advise against using lacquer thinner. I messed up a paintjob on some exhausts and soaked them in some lacquer thinner (swashing part around for like 15mins) and yes it got the paint off, but it also slightly melted the plastic which I wasn't expecting. Ended up having a big glooey mess. Had to shave so much of the plastic smooth
and lost a fair bit of moulded in detail. I'm not sure about resin, but I do know isopropyl alcohol is meant to be safe.

Re: how to strip paint off resin
pure 100% windex seems to be working. I put it in about 8:30 last night and pulled it out today at about 4:00 most of the paint came off with just my finger nail. There are some very small places in tight areas it did not come off with just my finger. it is almost 100% clean now and soaking in some soapy water. The only paint color I could find that was close to what I wanted was testors so I got some clear and some primer for this kit.
Thanks guys Brad |
