1999 gmc Sierra z71 starting problems
My 1999 Gmc Sierra died on way to work. I had previously broken the ignition key swith but the truck would still start. Going to work one morning truck died. It was rainy and cold had heard some noises coming from what sounded like a box on the floorboard on the drivers side. Like the ignition was trying to reset itself, Anyways broke the shifter off by accident. Replaced the steering column with a 1998 or 99 silverado column. Everything went back together just like it came out. Went to start it, nothing no power from the fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump it works cycles just like it should. Not sure what kind of pressure it has on the regulator still would not start. It would turnover act like it was going to go ahead and start but nothing. Put a brand new battery in it, still nothing got fuel, had fire, burned up the starter. Replaced starter and plugs to be safe and still nothing. almost something needs reset cleared to let it go ahead and start. I have been told body control module or hold pos. and neg. cables togeth for 2 min. hookup and start?

Re: 1999 gmc Sierra z71 starting problems
You replaced the steering column- did you re-learn the security? Has it ever started with new steering column? Is your security light on? or message on? That Passlock II is in the ignition switch, not the key- so it changed when you changed the steering column.

Re: 1999 gmc Sierra z71 starting problems
Passlock II failures on GM trucks will crank- fire and stall within 2 seconds- I know this from installing remote starters- If the bypass is not working, this is what happens. The injectors are shut down because of the failure. Passkey systems (chip in the key) will not crank as you describe......

Re: 1999 gmc Sierra z71 starting problems
Thanks for the help turned out to be the BCM body control module I did replace that but it has to be the same make and model of the one that came out GM then has to re program the BCM for the specific vehicle. I put a BCM from a 98 chevy which didn't work but thanks for the help
