I'd guess 2 maybe even 3, as long as you have quite a few bungee cords.
Why do I get the feeling Dr0pZ0n3 is going to know the EXACT number?

Re: a 4g hatch- complete interior(including spare tire).
With the full interior? If your not worried about damaging it then id say 3. I had one engine alone in the back of mine with a rear strut bar, but it didnt have the tranny although it could have... it just would have been a pain in the ass to get in.
HOWEVER, a whole list of options arises if your willing to remove the passenger seat, you can fit one there and also possibly load from the passenger side into the rear area. But that stuff is heavy.

Re: a 4g hatch- complete interior(including spare tire).
You'd be just over your weight limit at 4 engines with trans, iirc.
I've put 3 engines with flywheel/clutch/pressure plate in my Sedan, and it was slouching badly in the rear. One in the trunk, one in each side of the back seat, so all the weight was on the rear suspension directly. EDIT - I just measured up a few points in the sedan out back... I could pretty easily put 4 D-series engines in the back seat alone, without stacking them. I know at least 2 will fit in my trunk also, laying on their sides. (Which requires that they not have oil or water in them.) So that makes a total of 6, if the suspension could handle it. I'm pretty sure in a Hatch, you could fit 3 side by side across the back, 3 more where the back seat is, 2 more between the back seat and front seats on the floor spaces, and if you took out the passenger seat, you could get 3 more in there, provided you didn't have the manifolds bolted on each one. (They fit in a LOT less space w/ the manifolds off.) So that basically says that without even stacking them, you could probably fit 10-12 D-series engines in the hatch. Chances are, they'd fit tightly enough that you wouldn't have to strap them in, either... and you'd be ridin' low as shit too. Also - if you're using the stock engine to do that - you probably ain't goin' nowhere fast. Or even more than like 45MPH.

Wrong Sedan.. the old red one I had. I hauled the ZC home in it, then had to put a few more motors in it until I could find storage/homes for them all.
