96 Cadillac Deville warning lights

Hi.

I just got this Deville. It has some lights coming on in the dash warning system.

check engine soon
Then:

Service Transmission.....

Now....

Emissions System lights coming on.

What on earth??

Your car uses electronic controls for the engine, transmission, instrument cluster and other functions. In particular, it uses the OBDII system.

The electronics have a limited ability to diagnose and report on problems they find in the car. The lights you see are telling you that the electronics have found some problems and you or your mechanic need to fix them.

The first step is to 'scan' the electronics to find the codes. On your car, with the ignition 'on', push the 'Off' and the 'warmer' (red) button on the dashboard's climate control section. Now, I think your car has a digital readout on the dashboard. The codes should appear here. You can write them down on a piece of paper for future reference.
