As the title states, these are some of the things that I've noticed that I don't really like about the van I bought. None of them is major, but I just had to vent my frustration somewhere other than the body work, and with something other than a hammer, so here goes:
- The heater core comes out on the driver's side, after removing the I/P to body wiring connection and brake pedal, and disconnecting the steering shaft, to allow removal of the steering column. There is 2 cubic feet of room in the passenger footwell... Dodge engineers need to think a little more clearly at work.
- The crank pulley is a "press-fit" type, with no interference parts. The OEM pulley is milled so that it appears to be flush mounted with the end of the crank snout, but it's not. In actuality, the hole in the pulley is the same size as the bolt that goes into it. This means that in order to remove it, you need a 3jaw puller and a bolt that is longer than the OEM crank snout bolt, and has the same thread pitch, so as not to damage the crank.
- Changing the water pump requires removal of the entire front of the engine, including the cam and crank timing sprockets.
- The van does not (and apparently never did) come with a Tachometer in the gauge cluster.
- Two bolt patterns were used on these vans... apparently, if it came OE with 14's, it's 5X100mm, and if it came with 15's OE, it's something else.
- There is only a single bulb in each headlight... I prefer the dual bulb system that apparently, only the T&C got from 1998 on. I will seriously consider changing the head lights and adapting the wiring just to have two bulbs per headlight.
- It has leaf springs... WTF. It's not a truck. Trucks aren't FWD. Although according to Dodge, it's a truck. Meanwhile, the Ford Bronco II is a station wagon.
- It's quite hefty... over 3000 lbs.. and I'm definitely going to have to do something about that.
- Room under the hood. Everything is in the way. And if it's not, it will be when you try to move something else.
That's pretty much it so far... but like I said, these are all just nit-picky things that aren't really a big deal.. but some of them were quite frustrating to think about, like the crank pulley.. (I broke it).
