Gas gauge acting weird. 06 Jimmy 4x4

I was having a problem with starting my 96 Jimmy 4x4. Had the fuel pump replaced, which fixed the starting problem, but now my gas guage will move back and forth between 1/4 and 1/2 reading. When I pull up to a stop light, it will move from 1/2 to 1/4. When I resume moving it goes back to 1/2. It will do the same no matter how much gas is in the tank. If full, it will move to 3/4 and back to full. Any suggestions? Could it just be a bad fuel pump? I understand everything is in one unit.

Thanks, Jeff

The problem you're experiencing could be a faulty level sender or a poor connection, most likely at the fuel pump module. (The level sender is part of the fuel pump module, but can be serviced separately.)

This is very true but if your going through the trouble of removing the tank you should replace the complete pump with a new ac delco unit, I purchased mine from carquest for $290.00 and later found out that Advanced auto would of sold me one for $275.00...... just my luck

Re: Gas gauge acting weird. 06 Jimmy 4x4

Is when stopping the only time it act ups or changes?
Does it work right when stopped and driving?
When stopping the fuel runs to the front of tank and fuel level may change some.
Was the new fuel pump float level clocked the same as old pump?

What brand of fuel pump did you use?
Was the plugin rewired for new fuel pump.
Does it have a good ground and wiring good to fuel level sender?

Re: Gas gauge acting weird. 06 Jimmy 4x4

On my 2000 Jimmy, the fuel / gas guage has gone crazy. It goes from showing empty and LOW FUEL light goes on, and then can fluctuate to 1/2 or higher at will. This started suddenly. Never acted this way in the past. I'm thinking it might be a bare wire rubbing and making occasional contact???? Any suggestions? Thanks, tom
