4.6L V8 1995 Lincoln Town Car - Crooked dealer!

I purchased a 1995 Lincoln Town Car Cartier for $2000.00.

The transmission is definitely slipping on hills such that I have to get a "running start" to make it up the top. The dealer is giving me B.S. about this being normal.

Should I let him try to repair it at his shop? There is a thirty day express warranty on engine and transmission.

How much am I looking at to repair this? Should I get a junkyard transmission for $600.00? How many hours would it take a shop to swap a transmission?

Well if they are going to fix it under warrenty let them fix it.

The problem is that the dealer won't admit that there is a problem. He's saying that it is slipping because I am giving it too much gas. He said all Town Cars slip if you give it more than half way on the accelerator.

Well that sounds like a load of BS to me, I drive mine with led foot and no slipping there. What does that trans fluid look and smell like ? How many miles on the car ?

It is the '95 Town Car Cartier with 180k (is that a lot of miles for $2000 bucks?). The transmission fluid looked like it may need to be changed, but it was a nice translucent red.

When I put the gas pedal to the floor, the transmission grips for a second and then stops gripping and lets the car slow down until I release the pedal half way. Then, with lower engine RPM, it stops slipping. Does this sound like the torque converter or the transmission itself?

The dealer, if I get him to admit there is a problems, will probably want to fix the problem himself. I will be responsible for half of the labor and parts plus $100 deductible. He says he has first right to fix it. How do I make sure the problem really gets fixed without getting ripped off? What will shady dealers do to try to "patch" the problem so it lasts until the warranty runs out (30 days)?

180k is about typical, 2000 sounds reasonable if the car is in good over condition. My 94 has 230k on and runs and drives like a new car. I also have a 95 parts car with 175k which has had the trans has already rebuilt, not that long ago. So that one didn't make it to the 200 mark. I don't really know if the trans has been gone through on the 94, it is quite possible that it has.

It does sound like the torque converter is acting up. If the fluid looks clean the clutches in the trans are probably ok, unless some one flushed the trans to disguise contaminated fluid.

I would get a second opinion from a reputable trans shop, they could tell you what's up.

The shady dealers can do all kinds of stuff to monkey with the trans to make it seem ok. I have heard of ones putting saw dust in there to make it grab. There is all kinds of new transmission in a bottle fixes out there, never, never, never waste money on those products.

How handy are you? get a second opinion and do the repairs your self. The good trans shops are hard to find ask around. I've finally got a good one locally that does all my trans bench overhauls when I need one done, but I always do my own removal and installation.
