Popularity. (semi-long)

and no, i'm not talking about my popularity.

i'm talking about when something you REALLY like that nobody else likes (which is one of the reasons why you like it) get's completely blown up and out of nowhere, everyone likes it. i have 3 examples of this in my life right now:
a) drifting. i'm a huge fan of japanese competitive car drifting, and have been for years, and plan to purchase a 240SX within the next month to modify in order to drift competitivley (i've had those plans for years, but haven't been able to afford one until now). lately, with the help of the drift events in California that are run by the same guys that do Import Showoff and the help of some other rice individuals, drifting has all of a sudden blown up, and all the wrong people are getting into it. my once underground hobby has now been blown up, and that fucking pisses me off. now every little rice-boy is going to rush out and buy himself a 240SX, try to drift it right off the bat without learning how or setting the car up right, and he'll wrap it around a tree, wasting a good car and possibly himself (which wouldn't be so bad). there are some good things about it, like more events near me possibly sprouting up, but on the whole it's very, very bad.

b) Nissan 240SX. see above. now that drifting has blown up, yadda yadda every little rice boy wants one, they'll ruin them, prices will go up, and i'm not unique any more. not to flame, but when supratuner comes into the 240SX forums claiming he wants one now, it's officially been blown up.

c) punk music. bands like Good Charlotte and New Found Glory were once underground and un-heard of by anyone but me and a select few other people. i liked it that way. now, i can't walk down the street without hearing at least one person signing one of their songs. and then, there's people i know that HATE punk and are into rap music, but they listen to NFG and Good Charlotte just because it's the "cool thing to do". honestly, when my 7 year old cousin knows every word to one of their songs, it's gone too far. don't get me wrong, i still love these bands, but i like them less now then i did before and have found other, still underground bands to listen to instead.

well, i feel a bit better now...but these things still enrage me to no end.

the desire to be different just for the sake of being different when you're just like everyone else is as hypocritical as it gets. liking something less just coz a lot of other people start liking it is bogus and i dont' believe a word of it. if you like something, then you like it regardless of what other people think. if you don't, you don't. so what if other people start liking the same things you do. shit happens. do your own thing and do it in the absence of thought about other people if you despise conformity so much.

create your own style. dont' let other people's interests create it for you. you're going to waste too much time avoiding the trends and fads of the time that sooner than later that's all you do and that becomes your identity. you're goin to be that guy.

i'm all about individuality and establishing your own unique identity. but you're going nowhere if you continue to pursue "being different" just to say you're different, not coz you actually are different and unique. dont' be so concerned about what other people like or dont' like. just myst $.02

You don't want to flame, but you're quite happy to diss another member..

And you don't own a 240SX but think that someone else is a poser because he wants one too?

Chech your values, you're getting screwed up over nothing. <j00

I can see where you're coming from. My tip - ignore the rest of them. Let it roll off your back and do your own thing anyway.

i dont think the price of 240s will go up, all the rice boys here, besides me, still just want honda civics and acura integra.

also, i hate good charlotte, but i love NFG, ive been listeing to them for a year 1/2, back then, me and my best friend were the only ones in school that listened to them. it was the same thing for weezer
now all these preppy SOBs come up to me and him and act like they are palying a guiitar and start sign their songs, and it pisses us off

Naki-

What gets me and Brian is that we've liked this stuff for years. We found it out through different paths, but we always liked it.
It was an escape from the Bling-Bling, Audio and Bodykit scene of imports.

It doesnt matter if your cars a is half dead, as long as you have skill. We met some people also into this sport, and I know I relish the fact this is underground, and only a few people know of it. You need real mechanical knowledge, and you need to know how your car handles. Its truly a higher form of motorpsort.

And as far as Brian not having a 240SX....we dont have parents who can buy us cars, so we need to work for them....I know kids who have gotten Integra-R's for their B-Day and bang them up while backing into a spot

Imagine what they'd do with an RWD car after pulling the handbrake going thru a turn at 100km/h

del - i'm not "that guy", don't worry. i'm not getting all bent out of shape about this, but it DOES make me mad to a certain extent. believe me, these facts are not changing my views on these 3 things. i still love drifting, i will own a 240SX within the next month, and no matter how many people listen to them, i still like all the punk bands that i did before. i'm doing my own unique thing, it's just that alot of other people seem to be trying to do the same unique thing that i am...i like 240SX's because they're excellent cars, not just because nobody else likes them. i like drifting because it's fun and challenging, not because nobody else has heard of it. i like punk because it's good music, not because nobody else listens to it. the fact that they're not so popular is just sort of an added bonus.

Mr.T - as i said, i've wanted to buy a 240SX for literally years now. the fact is i haven't been able to afford one until recently. i've been working hard for my money and soon it'll pay off. as for supratuner, i didn't mean to flame him and heres why. not even a month ago, he was talking about how he adored cars that were strictly for show with no performance to them, which is obviousley not an S13's forte. he razzed me about how drifting was "stupid", and he idolized his brother's Accord with Altezza lights, 18 inch chrome rims, and hardly anything done to the engine. but now, with the first S13 he sees, he decides to jump headfirst into wanting a 240SX. i don't know if he's changed his views or not, but from what i've seen, he won't be using this car as a driving machine. i guess my comment was wrong, but from what evidence i have, it's the truth.

this is a stress release forum after all. these things were stressing me out for about an hour last night, but now, they've rolled off my back and i don't really care any more.

okay

i didnt say i wnated a car that was strictly show, and no go, but im saying a lot of these cars in japan are ugly, including alot of 240s, supras, rx7s, skylines, etc...

and just because i find a 240 sx that i like, i and can get a 240 for aobut $3000 or less doesnt mean u have to falme me about it

I never said that i want it to be a show car either, but i never said i wanted to drift in it either, i jsut want soem thing that looks good, and has some speed in it.

Yes you said you want the car to look good, and didnt care if a body kit improved functionality or not.

The RX7 is regraded as one the best designs of the last FD years, Japanese, American or Europoean. It is also a technological marvel

The Skylines just look plain agressive. With their FMICs, gunmetal wheels, and 4 tail lights, you wouldnt wanna mess with them.

Supras are ugly? I thought you adored them...oh wait, now the F&F is no longer cool, you dont like them.

Then again you dont like anything thats not "in" and doesnt have a huge body kit, 20's a bumpin stereo and Altezzas'

That 240 has about 25grand of modifications, EASILY. The rims alone are 600-800 a peice.
The bumper must have taken TONS of custom fab, the paint and bodywork was hella expensive...
And an Auto 240.....must have been 5000 for the engine alone...

And 240SX prices have been spiking recently-dont expect to find a decent shape running one for under 3000

Well then WTF are you gonna do with it??? Mad Pose like my dear friend Ricky Chu? Dump countless amounts of money, only to find 240SX's are out of style already??

The stock KA isnt fast, and the hognose bumper is an ugly mofo.
The stock 240 is neither fast, nor good looking. You want those buy a Civic and dump a B16A.
Im serious, they dont look BAD, and a B16A has SOME speed, no?

Heres a table for you.

1990 240SX coupe with 100,000miles, ugly hognose bumper, minor damage:
$3000~

Repairs, maintence, spare parts(its a ten year old car, be realistic)
$1500

Silvia frontend:
1000-1500

SR20swap(PLEASE dont get it)
$4000-10000(depending on year, condition, plus install)

rims:
1500-3500(including tires)

Bodykit:
????(depends on style)

So altogether thats $13,000, assuming you get a blacktop 1995 SR, and moderately priced rims and tires.

Thats alotta bones for a "3000" car
Ricky CHus car easily must be $30,000-$40,000 with all mods
Jerrys car is around 20,000-25,000

You can have a 320whp Supra for around $20,000, in GOOD condition, plus they "look hot"

first of all, when i listed all those cars, i met to say the drift and racing cars of japan are ugly

iv elooked around in auto traders from my area and 240s are pretty cheap, mostly since no one around here dont know much about the drifting scene and how they could sell them for more

when i said i dont want a show car or a drift machine, i met, this isnt some thing im gonna go all out with body modifications, and im not gonna go all out on the engine and the work with the chasis to drift in it, i mostly just want to swap in a sr20det and just the main mods for the engine and a S13 front conversion, and skyline front bumber.

any other questions?>

you're being really encouraging here, aren't you, Derek? let him do what he wants. there's already enough riced out 240's out there. it's not like we can go around stopping all of them from doing it. they paid money for the car and it's their decision as to what they want to do to it. if he wants to spend that much money, then so be it. i know that's what i'm going to do. i want only the best parts from Japan for my 240SX, no cheap crap (performance first, looks last, if at all, of course), so i'll be looking to spend that much money and i'm ready and willing to do it because that's what i want. if that's what he wants, then let him at it. to him, we're merely words on a screen. and if he does ruin it (not saying he will), so what? it's 1 240SX out of who knows how many that have been made. plus, he's not even old enough to drive yet (i don't think...), so whos saying it won't be 1 or 2 or more years before he gets it? and who says he'll get it at all? opinions change fast. i'm not siding with him, but i think we owe the guy at least a bit of respect in that we let him make his own decisions.

suprauner, since when do you care about engine performance? The other day you were talkin about how you could care less about what kind of engine your car has and you're building it so it can look nice and.. "get girls".
Make up your mind .
