Broke Gear

can any one help me, my car has some typ of boot in the gear shifter ???
any way it broke the first and second gear and now i only have 3-4-5 -R but the car is still drivable but now I can tell that the more I use it the rest of the gears want to go to, it has nothing to do with transmission its just the gear shifter thingies, like a broken wire of some sort, dose any one know what i mean ?? please help me asap!

First of...let us know what kind of car you have - a saturn?. Second, I had a VW in the past and the nylon link between the shifter and trans cracked...only giving me 3rd and 4th gears... lost R - 1 -2 -5. Was an inexpensive repair...done on my own in a few min.
