98 grand cherokee stalling out and idling rough

my jeep has a mind of its own apparently, it stalls out occasionally at stop signs and redlights and will sputter sometimes to. mechanic told me to replace ground cable from battery to chasis because it was corroded and would cause the pcm to act up causing my problems. so i replaced and it ran smooth for a week or so then started having same problems again. Now before I took to mechanic i took to autozone and tester said primary/secondary ignition coil malfunction so i replaced ignition coil and ran like a champ for a week or 2 and same problems came back. I have replaced ignition coil again and it is running smooth so far but is starting to idle alittle rough again. This does not happen everyday, sometimes it will drive somewhat smooth to destination, and will stall out on the way back. these problems do not start out all at once. it will sputter once or twice one day and then the next day it will stall out once or twice, then it gets so bad within the next day or 2 i have to park it. after sitting for a month or so, i will drive it again and it usually runs pretty good for a day or 2 before problems come back again. somebody please help me before i donate this jeep to eod.

Could be the IAC (idle air controller). There's lot's of posts here about it causing rough idle.

If it is the 4.0 L test the crank position sensor. I have seen these start to go bad and not throw a code.

Just a thought.

it does sound like your iac. unplug it and see how it runs.

Re: 98 grand cherokee stalling out and idling rough

Same problem with my 1996 Grand cherokee 4.0 liter.
Seems to stall at low speeds or when I am coming to a stop or at a stop.
Have had the problem for three months.
Changed distributor cap and rotor, still had problem
Removed old battery and put new battery in Jeep, still had problem
checked Alternator, Checks OK, still had problem
Cleaned throttle body, still had problem
No codes show up with ODB11
Bought new IAC and removed old one. The port was totally cloged, cleaned port with throttle body cleaner, needed to use q-tips to get as much oil and carbon out as I could. Installed new IAC and it ran great.
I will test it on a longer trip tomorrow.
If this does not do it the next thing is the crank shaft sensor or the cam shaft sensor.
After that if it happens again the Jeep gets donated to charity.
