I had the same trouble with the service 4x4. What happens when you push the buttons from 2wd to 4w hi and then to 4wd low??? Do they go in each mode?? Mine did not and would go back the the last mode (which was 2wd, in my case). I searched on here and then looked to wards replacing my 4wd switch in the dashboard. (left of the dashboard). I was surprised to see that when I took the switch completely apart and could see the actual circuit board that it looked good. But when I look further and then push on one of the buttons and then looked at the circuit board again, I could see a hairline crack in the solder weld. Pulled out my solder gun and re soldered all of the joins again. Never had another problem again. 148,000 miles now and still running, never had a service 4dw since then.

That is the easiest and cheapest trouble to look for. I would not buy a new switch, fix yours, very easy.

Hope this helps.

when posting give vehicle year and type, also all the issues with the code found...

In your case I can only say the computer is not happy with the communication checks to/from the auto transfer case...

with this it could be the auto transfer case control module, or any wiring/connectors ....so what else is occuring besides the 4wd light on..

you need to get the DTC from the drive train..this requires a scanner that can access these codes, not all scanners can do this..then report the DTC....

since it was rebuilt check all wiring /connectors for condition and security...check fluid level and condition...is the fluid blue or is it dexron III, IF IT IS RED THEY put the wrong fluid in it..TRAC II fluid is the correct transfercase fluid to use..

this is the same vehicle I have..
