93 Mercury Tracer not starting

It has a brand new battery and I think something may be draining the battery, but I cannot figure out what.
It's fine when I jump it, but it took 3 weeks for something to drain the battery, then this time it drained overnight, but I don't think I let it charge as long as the last time I jumped it. I don't believe it's the alternator, and when I jump it the starter sounds fine, could it maybe something else in between? I just can't figure it out...and when it's on and running and I'm stopped it kind of shakes.

Re: 93 Mercury Tracer not starting

Welcome to Automotive Forums. One of the electrical circuits of your system is draining the battery.. the most common drain is when a door is left partially open and the dome light discharges the battery. To find out where the drain is coming from you need to take the positive battery terminal off and put a test light between the terminal and the post. If there is a drain the test light will light up. Make sure the dome light is off if the door is open and make sure the trunk is closed so that light won't give you a false readiing. Now, start pulling and replacing fuses in the fuse box in the passenger area, drivers side. If you pull a fuse and the test light goes out, that is the circuit the drain is on. Now, if you don't have a Haynes manual that has the electrical diagrams you can post on the Escort Forum and find out what that circuit supplies power to. The Mercury Tracer is identical to the Ford Escort. There are just minor body differences. In the future your search for solutions can be better achieved by posting in the Ford Escort Forum..
