99 Mercury Tracer

What is the box on the end of the negative terminal on a 99 mercury tracer. I need to change the battery terminal, but can't find a terminal end with a place for this piece.

I have researched the little black box and nobody knows what it is. However,
one person discarded it and put on universal cable ends and had no problem with it afterwards.
