Check engine light problems fixed, not fixed?
Bought my 2000 Hyundai Elantra with 57,000 miles on it. It was in great shape and has never given me any problems so far. Around two to three months ago one night the check engine light came on and went off a few days later. So I thought nothing of it.
It came back on again a while later and I just kept driving the car. The car still drove the same so I thought nothing of it. Recently I figure I would get whatever was making the light go on fixed. I took it to my mechanic and told him to give it a look.
He told me there was a problem with the evap line and that it had to be fixed. He fixed this along with a broken rotor and an oil change. Everything came to 400 dollars. Light was off and the car drove a lot better. One hour after being on the road the light came back on. I took it back the next day and said I had no money to keep dumping into the car to fix every little thing. He said no worries and looked at it again.
After checking around the car with his meter and clearing out some hoses the light once again was off. And once again after an hour the light came back on. I'm not going back to this guy as I feel I just got taken for 400 bucks. I feel I should just go out and buy one of those code readers myself and see what they actually are saying.
I have been reading the manfiold exhaust has a history with these models of hyundai's. Is there a way for me to check it myself to see if it has any cracks? My inspection is coming up in April so i have some time to play with. But I want to make sure this light goes away, I'm tierd of looking at it and getting tierd of just giving away money for repairs that seem like they were for naught. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
