Stock Axle wrong size 91 civic

I have a 91 Honda civic hatchback manufactured by honda of canada 6/91. I just tried swapping out the drivers side axle and the one from autozone doesnt fit. The Transmission side fits great its the right length but the tines on the wheel side are noticably bigger then the one I took out. Took the part back with the core and they looked in every model honda a few years up and down and everything had those same bigger tines. Did honda use any other parts that anyone knows of?

Your car is a STD model then, and is did have a smaller axle on the knuckle side. Same with the crx HF. Ask them for one from a standard civic, or a crx hf. It might show up as civic hatchback or just 3 door civic or something. It wont have a dx or SI at the end. Your car must have a 4 spd.

Yes it is a 4 speed. I'll hit up Schucks today and see if they have what I'm after. Only part that sucks is that I have one car so I have to put it all back together to drive to the store so I cant compair parts. I did caliper the tines though so I'll check the measurment at the store.

There are only two axles that belong to manual trans in our Civics

You have the STD/HF axle and the rest of them.

What this means is that if you have an axle to trade them that doesn't fit your car, and the one they wanna give you is smaller than the one you're taking back, it will work.

Thank you both. Grabbed the hf parts and they worked perfectly. You would think the damn parts guy would know that or at least have something in the computers they look at. They looked at me like I was retarded for asking for crx parts for my civic.

Imagine what I get when I go to parts stores and ask for Neon parts to go on a Caravan - or, better yet, when I go pricing performance parts for a 2000 Caravan :P

Honestly, parts store people anymore seem to only be as intelligent as that computer in front of their faces - which isn't very intelligent at all.

I talked to the local "Ford guy" who "Knows everything there is to know about fords before year 2000" and "can do any swap there is" in "any ford there is" and "has pretty much done it all" - you get the idea.

Anyway, I talked to this guy to find out a few things for a swap I did. I asked - simply - How hard is it to put a 3.2 Engine in an Escort?
"Can't be done, won't fit, and engine WON'T bolt up to tranny."

Keep in mind here - the 3.0 is shorter and wider than the 1.9 that comes stock... and DOES bolt up to the MTX tranny... ironic, huh?

Ok - so If I want to swap in a Zetec Motor, should I use the Focus engine or the Escort ZX2 engine?

Ford's part numbers for the blocks are the same... engine mount is different.

Ironically, I haven't had too many problems getting parts from different models for my Civic though... most people around here seem to know that Civic/CR-X and half the Integra parts are pretty well interchangeable.

I have a 91 hatch that I think is from Canada also. I am in the process of replacing the driver side dive axle for the second time. I thought that the inside joint just failed the first time because I was making a sharp U-turn and accelerated quickly. The thing blew out. Since I put the new one in I have had a problem when I put the car into drive after backing out of my parking spot, with the wheel cut all the way. It would make a loud chunky clicking and jerk the car for a sec then would be fine to dive. I saw smoke coming from under the hood and noticed grease on the exhaust. I just pulled the axle out and found the inner boot was all twisted and torn. I guess that with the wheel cut the bearings travels to far out of that inner cup and that is what the noise and jerking was, resulting in the twisted and torn bearing.

Did I get the right axle? Are there differing lengths?
Any suggestions?
The groves all lined up with the replacement axle.

The axle was just worn out. Or the boot tore and then all the grease came out and killed the axle. Either way there are not different lengths and if it fit into the transmission and hubs then you didn't do anything wrong.

I think that was the case on the first one, but I just replaced the axle about 2 months ago.
The reason the boot ripped is because when the wheel is cut all the way to the left and the car put in to drive, the axle travels just enough for the 3 bearings, housed in the cup like thing on the inner joint, to pop out of the cup and slip a few times. This makes the boot twist and tear.
I could take this axle, replace the boot and repack it with grease and it would be like new, but I fear it would result in the same problem.
The fact that it shows signs of popping out of that cup due the length of travel with the wheel cut, leads me to believe that I might have the wrong axle.
The one I have has a round rubber bushing thing on the shaft where the one I replaced did not. The bushing thing is not connected to any thing and there is nothing around to connect it to.

If you went to the parts store, and you bought an axle, make sure you get a New axle instead of a refurbished one... often times, refurbished axles are only repacked and new boots put on them, and they soon (if not immediately) begin clicking again... I went through 3 driver side and 7 passenger side axles (life time warranty) before I found a set that didn't make noise.

If your axles are coming apart, you either have worn motor mounts or something in your suspension is damaged/worn enough to let your wheel sit further away at fill tilt than it should be.

I would vote suspension damage as well.. your wheel must be further away than it should be.

Yeah the car appears to have front D/S damage from a previous owner. Nothing major wrong that I can see with the suspension but something must be slightly off.
I did get a refurbished part this time and the darn thing is clicking already.
I guess this is just going to be an on going problem.
