Driver Side Power Window Not Working - 99 GMC Jimmy

Hello,

I have a 1999 GMC Jimmy and the driver side power window has stropped working. When I press the button to lower the window, I hear a click-click-click noise for as long as I am holding the button but the window does not move at all. Fortunatley, it is in the up position. I don't hear any motor noise either when I hold the button down.

I took it to the dealer and they quoted me $850 to fix it but could not tell me what they were going to fix -- i.e., they didn't bother to really look. Either way, $850 is way too much for this type of issue so I'm trying to figure this one out on my own. Chances are it is a real easy fix. I'm not sure about this but I think this issue began right around the time I had locked my keys in the car and they stuck something down inside the door to pop the lock (I wasn't home so I didn't see what they did). I just wonder if they didn't pull a wire loose or something when they were fishing around in there.

Based on the symptoms I described above, can anyone give me some insight into what this might be? Also, if anyone has any insight on how to disassemble the door paneling, that would be great! I took a look at it and am got the switch assembly piece removed but am not sure about how to remove the main paneling in case I need to get to the motor.

Thanks in advance for any input or suggestions you might have! Here's to saving several hundred dollars....

Re: Driver Side Power Window Not Working - 99 GMC Jimmy

Is the clicking from inside door?
If so you may need to remove the door panel and have a look in there.
If motor runs and just makes a clicking noise the have a gear on the end of motor that sometimes strips out.
Is the master switch switching power to the window motor or down express module?

Up and down is reversing power from neg to pos and pos to negitive on window motor.
Check the s-10 section on how to door panel /window motors
A good repair manual or all data will have instructions on removing door panel and testing the window motor and switches and the wiring diagrams.
http://www.alldata.com/products/diy/index.html

When you get the door pane off xheck the wiring for damage that may have been done with the slim jim door lock unlocking.

Thanks for the quick feedback. The clicking is not inside the door, it is at the up/down button. When I press the button, I can feel that click-click-click with my finger and if I put my ear up to it, the sound is right at the button. Is there any way I can test the button/switch?

Yes the factory repair manual or All data online sub has the switch test.

I always get the wiring diagram and see if the switch is switching power and ground to the window motor.
Also somewhere in there there is a window down module.
The clicking could be from there to.
Good luck

Re: Driver Side Power Window Not Working - 99 GMC Jimmy

Hey 99GMCJimmy,

It sound like the window regulator or the motor seized. What you are hearing is the auto down relay engaging and immediately disengaging because the window motor is not moving. The stalled motor is drawing high current and causing the circuit which monitors the window motor current to disengage the relay which provides current after you let go of the switch for the auto down function, however in this case the circuit trips almost immediately due to the seized motor or window regulator.

That is the cause, in order to figure this out you have to take the window motor out, now for the f-----d up part - the window motor is riveted in! In order to get it out you have to cut, drill, grind, fold, spindle or mutilate the rivets to get them out! Ideally you need to take the whole window regulator assembly out to do this, since one of the motor rivets is behind the window regulator gear and won't come out since it is installed from the back side.

I had the same problem on my '02 Blazer and replaced the motor using screws and nuts to re-install the motor but it was kind of half assed and now that it has gotten cold the window motor gear slips in the window regulator. The problem is that the rivets aren't pop-rivets they are the stake in kind.

If anyone has any tricks for installing the rivets I am open to suggestions - I am sure that 99GMCJimmy would like to know too.

Good luck,

Sparky

Re: Driver Side Power Window Not Working - 99 GMC Jimmy

Hey,

I have a 2000 Blazer with a dead driver's window. Stuck in up position. I verified its not the switch. I drilled out the rivets on the regulator. But I cannot figure out how to get the regulator/motor out of the door. Do I need to drillout the motor's rivets? I read online that could be dangerous due to the clock spring. Is there any tricks that you know? All directions I have found online say remove the regulator and motor at the same time...

Thanks,
Tree

The web site posted is good .
http://www.a1electric.com/s10motor.htm
Or look in s-10 how to section.
Have you looked it over?
Get the hole thing on bench or in vise.
Taker care removing the motor from regulator.
Keep fingers out of the road of clock spring and hinge and be sure to.
Count fingers before and after.
Good luck

The window has been popped off track and is stuck. If it was a bonded lock shop that opened your doors they are responsible for the problem, have them fix it.

Re: Driver Side Power Window Not Working - 99 GMC Jimmy

Hey 99gmcjimmy I was wondering if you ever figured out what happened to your window? I have the same exact problem with my window and im having a really tough time trouble shooting it. I really dont want to purchase a 160 dollar driver switch and it not be the issue. I have the same exact things going on with my window but the passenger window does work. If you could get back to me that would be awesome. Or if anyone else has expierienced a problem like this would you please share some tips, Thanks in advance.

Re: Driver Side Power Window Not Working - 99 GMC Jimmy

I've had the same problem off and on for the past couple of years in my 2000 Jimmy. After a few days - weeks the window starts working again without problem, and will stay that way for a number of months. I'm guessing it's a stripped gear that just hits the right spot to stop the window. If it slips again then you should get the window working again without taking the door apart, which is why I haven't fixed it yet. I've never liked taking door panels off, I've always had problems putting them back on like they were factory. If anyone has some possble fixes, short of drilling out the motor, I'm curious to hear about them!

Re: Driver Side Power Window Not Working - 99 GMC Jimmy

I have had to deal with the driver's side window being tempermental. At times it has a mind of it's own and will get stuck down about two to three inches. I have to grab the Saran Wrap and boxing type tape to protect it from the weather. It's raining in Sacramento! Anyhow, when it's finally over sixty (60) degrees and the sun shines on that side, I start the motor and press and sometimes, miraculously it goes up and I start tearing off the Saran Wrap and tape. The tape has left its marks all over the driver side window. Was told the same that it'd cost about $850.00 to repair cause they have to remove the entire panel. I went to a different place and they're nice, said they'd do it for a hundred bucks. They know how to repair it. So, when I'm able to will return to them.
