96, I heard a pop under the hood & my brakes stopped working

I need suggestions as to where to start, what makes a loud popping sound almost like a backfire but not that loud, that would stop the brakes from working, car starts fine??

My first thought would be that the vacuum line popped off the brake booster. This in turn would make your brakes feel inoperative. That would be where I would start.

this just happened to me today, i have a 94 suburban. ive heard this popping noise a few times before, but just today when i parked to go into the store it was louder than normal, i come out of the store and my brakes had literally NO stopping power, i had to use my ebrake to get home. the pedal goes straight to the floor with very little resistance and the brake light comes on.

where would i find the vacuum line and brake booster located?
any other thoughts of what it could be if this isnt the issue?

I don't think that is your problem...not sure if you have this type system....

Seems more like you have a major leak....

Does your master cylinder still has brake fluid in it?
