Question Stop Lights/Cruise Control Failures combined

2005 Colorado-bought brand new. Notice every time cruise control doesn't work, neither do the stop lights. Have had to replace the stop light switch now 4 times since 2005. Were not aware stop lights were bad until stopped by CHP. Took in to dealer to repair stop lights, we noticed the cruise control worked again. Then vice versa, cruise went out or so we thought, so did stop lights. Dealer cannot find problem except to keep changing switch which repairs both. Have spent $$$ trying to get corrected. Thinking of trading in vehicle but not for another Colorado.

Re: Stop Lights/Cruise Control Failures combined

Hi Lou,

Maybe you should trade dealers and not the truck!

Did you add on a cap on the back of your truck? With me, I had the same problem and it turned out to be a short in a wire leading from my left tail light to the light on my cap. If your brake lights fail, it knocks out your cruise control as a warning.

If you have modified the wiring in the back, I would look for a short.

Hope this helps...

Re: Stop Lights/Cruise Control Failures combined

Thanks for the response! Your response certainly helps!! I had someone else check the truck besides the dealer since my original posting. They too mentioned the cap on the back of the truck. I have an appointment to get diagnostics done on the truck on Tuesday. I will mention this fact to them and have them check for a short and hope to never change that switch out again. And, yes, I am changing dealers and keeping the truck. It's a good solid truck. Thanks again!

Lou

Re: Stop Lights/Cruise Control Failures combined

I hope that's all it is and nothing worse or more expensive.

By the way, in researching other problems that I have had in the past, I found another great site, similiar to this one, except it only pertains to Colorado trucks. Check it out sometime!
