1998 "clunking" at takeoff
I have a 1998 villager 125K on it, when taking off from a standstill from a red light or such you here a pretty good "clunk" sounds like from the drivers side. Could this be the cv shaft how do I tell if it is bad? thanks

Look at the rubber cv boots on the halfshafts (CV axle) are they torn or does it look like any grease has been thrown around. Also you should be able to check for worn joints by trying to move the axle shafts by hand. Check your motor mounts as this sounds more like the problem. When you take off from a stop light with broken motor mounts the engine will move up and down making it appear to be a clunk. Good luck and lets us know what you find. |

Re: 1998 "clunking" at takeoff
Motor mounts. I just replaced my front one and the clunking has gone almost completely away. I suspect the rear could be done as well. You can test it though. Have someone sit in the drivers seat and with a good hold on the brake, raise the engine speed a little the motor should not move much. If it heaves dramtically, the mounts are broken.

Re: 1998 "clunking" at takeoff
Sorry it took so long the "clunking" was from the front motor mount it was shot. It has been replaced. I paid $170 to have it done, I could have got the part for around $50 bucks and saved myself some cash, but I didn't have the time.
thanks for the help |
