96 Chev 4x4 1500/ front wheels wont lock anymore

Im a deployed soldier. I am the owner of a 96 Chev 1500 Ext. Cab with 5.7 ltr. I plan on fixing this truck when I return home. The problem occured when I was at the Beach and the 4x4 stopped working and got it stuck.

There was no noise, just disengaged while turning sharp left.

Rear wheels still transfer to low range and I use it as a daily driver.

Im thinking its a locker (electronic) the light on the shifter will not go on either.

Another issue is the lack of power.

I took off the Cat, after I put on headers. There should be a way get to get the power back with out it?

Theres a story behind everything I didnt take off the cat by choice, it was HIGHCENTERED in which ruined the manifold as well. It was faster (and better)to put headers on it.

Its lifted 2-3" Body I have 32" tires. without rubbing maybe 33"s

I want to put a suspension lift on it, so i can clear a 35" tire or larger.
Im going for ground clearance/ ride quality / gear ratios / Not into super bad mileage

I am Open to suggestions to build this truck up. Thanx SGT Anderson

If front axel is not locking in check the actuater motor on front axel.
Also 4W is fused check fuse.

Illegal to remove cat.
And sometimes removing it will drop power.
Is the 02 sensors on and working.

The actuator motor must be the only thing with a wire coming out of it on the transfer axle.

And if its fused under the hood would it have clear markings in the box? I dont remember seeing one for it.

The O2 sensor (ONE) Is a three wire Its hooked up to a bung after the Y. I never tested it and there kinda expensive.
The headers I got (Flowtec) ceramic have a spot for the o2 sensor on the driverside.

That wouldnt cause a problem(O2 Sensor reading Just one side)?? would it?
I plan on putting dual 2 1/4" cats and chambered mufflers!

The Lack of power could be a Fuel pump ( Im reading about several) where Its noticable full throttle. Thats where mine is.
As i start up drive around fine but where I used to gett on it, it just pukes.

Is it OK put larger injectors in a TBI (given right tools) would it give more power or just waste gas?

The actuator motor is on front axel
Old style is 2 wire motor.

Fues panel should be marked for fuses.
On engine running get a good scanner on it and test for codes and sensor readings.
If any codes post back code no.

Re: 96 Chev 4x4 1500/ front wheels wont lock anymore

Is this really a 96? A 96 K1500 5.7 should have 4 O2 sensors, I thought that in 96 only the 4.3 and 5.0 trucks had only 1 cat, the 5.7 had 2 cats. If its a true 96 setup(OBD2 and CSFI), you will need the O2 sensors in the headers.

The 4wd fuse should be in the interior fuse panel and the front axle actuator is on the passenger side of the front axle
