98 olds check engine light flashing & engine sputter
check engine light flashing and engine sputter with serious exhaust system rattle
The light is still on, it starts out steady then flashes while driving. it was totally 100% fine yesterday. I didn't drive it today but around the block just to see and it sputtered all the way. Then in park I gave it gas and couldn't rev over 4000 rpm's but noticed that it was less rough at 2500 rpm or so. The engine is vibrating so I guessing that's what rattling the whole exhaust system from the manifold back. I thought it might be the converter but there were no prior symptoms that usually see with that problem. I don't want to damage anything but its a 15 minute ride to Auto-zone. Re: 98 olds check engine light flashing & engine sputter
A flashing CEL is an indication of a serious misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.
Is the light still on? If so you can get it scanned at most any auto parts store and get a code that might point you in the right direction. Where is the exhaust rattle coming from as far as location? It could quite likely be a clogged catalytic converter causing the issues.

At 4000 rpm you would be into the rev limiter. Keep it down below 3500 while troubleshooting the misfire.
Sounds like possible a plug or plug wire? |

engine sputter update I still got the check engine light on; can auto zone clear it f
Just an update and wishes for a happy New Year to all on this forum…
I went to Auto zone today and they are so nice and helpful but didn’t know specifically about the code that came up (P300) being short on time I brought it to a local mechanic and paid $60 bucks for an in-depth diagnosis. It was actually the ignition module which I just replaced and it’s back to its normal self. I still got the check engine light on; can auto zone clear it from the computer? Thanks again Paul |

Re: engine sputter update I still got the check engine light on; can auto zone clear it f
P0300 is: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
Autozone may or may not clear it. I asked them to clear a code for me once and they said they couldnt do it for liability reasons. An OBDII code-reader might be a good investment for you. They can be had for around 20-25 bucks on Ebay. At least thats what I paid for mine. That way you can read and clear your own codes at your convenience.

Re: 98 olds check engine light flashing & engine sputter
A flashing CEL means a serious misfire and you should get it checked out immediately. I wouldn't waste time getting the codes read at aauto part store since whatever is wrong needs to be fixed. The car is telling you that it needs immediate attention. Take it to your mechanic to get it fixed.
Edited: I see on another post that you did take it to a mechanic. Talk to your mechanic. He may be able to clear it for you. BTW, i purchased a OBDII reader from Harbor Freight. I think it was $29. |

oldsowner718,
Your two posts on the same issue have been consolidated to cut down on confusion, possible redundant replies and having multiple threads on the same issue.
