P0404 and P0405

This is for a 2001 buick LeSabre.

Ok so I have a Service Engine soon light on the car. And

I got this fancy new OBD II scanner for christmas. I'm so giddy. anyhow I checked the codes for my car and the codes where P0404 and P0405.

Now according to the scanner this points me to my EGR valve that I bought within the 2008 year (still under warranty but just barely, thank god).

Now I plan on going to the store to get a new replacement but why did I get this failure I wonder. Are these EGR's just prone to failure or is something else making it fail?

If I had to pay for it it would cost $274.00. what do you think. Anything else I should check before the newest one I get fails?

Other reasons than just an egr can set the code, check this link http://service.gm.com/gmspo/mode6/pd.../2001file4.pdf

If you get a code, fix the problem, the code doesn't go away. It could be left over from when it went bad before.
Clear it, see if it comes back.
Chris.

Remove the EGR and push the pintel in gently. It should be free, with no binding. Carbon deposits (oil in exhaust) can cause binding. How much oil does the engine consume?

Re: P0404 and P0405

Engine does not consume any oil. (At least I hope it doesn't) I just changed the upper and lower manifold gaskets. Before that I would leak oil but as far as blowing oil I don't think that it does.

I will keep an eye on that though.

I was under warranty with the EGR so I changed for a new one and the code was cleared and did not return as of yet.

The old EGR's pintle was easy to push in so I don't really get why it errored out.

Anyway I have another years warranty on the new one so we shall see how long it lasts.
