Power Window Repair

My son car is an '88 Ciera. Power windows will operate fine from each individual door switch (passenger, rear doors). The master switch is dead. It will not operate any of the four windows. I've checked other threads and concluded a possible broken wire in the hingle area of the drivers door.

1)Would a broken wire in this area still allow the other window switches to work? I'd read another thread suggesting the other three switches being fed from the master switch.

2)What is involved with a wire repair in this area? Is there a connector or plug behind the kick panel, where the PW harness might connect to so I could pull the entire door harness out for inspection? Otherwise it would seem difficult trying to inspect the wires behind the rubber boot in the hingle area.

Thanks in advance

Re: Power Window Repair

On my dad's 89 Cutluss he had to cut the boot to find the problem..which he did. two of his wires were broken, 2 more were almost. Not sure on your situation but all of his were dead at the time.

Re: Power Window Repair

On my 91 Cutlass Ciera, I just pulled the boot out of the door/ post and repaired the broken wires. Then pushed the boot back into place. Pulled on the wires to locate the ones that were broken. Good luck!

Re: Power Window Repair

Welcome to AF Cobrargc !!

You can pop out the master switch and check for power. If everythings dead I would bet the wires are broken in the jam area inside the boot.
It is pretty easy to pull the boot back and check without cutting the boot. That might allow water to drain inside the cabin area.

Those little wire but connectors work well for repairing damaged wires.

Re: Power Window Repair

Hey thanks for the info. It did turn out to be 2 broken wires inside the rubber boot. It is now repaired and working fine.
