Windshield Wiper Issue

Ok, so my windshield wipers are messed up. A few weeks ago, I went to use my wipers and they flew up with the passenger side going off of the car then back on. Well, my dad found an oil filter wrench wedged up underneath the wipers. That would explain why they weren't going all the way back down. So, we removed the wrench, and repositioned the wipers to where they should be. Making sure that the arms were not bent or anything. And I am still having the same issue. The wipers are torqued correctly, yet every time I turn them on, they fly up, the passenger one goes off the car, and they both slam down, then they pop back up fast again, and stick there. Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions? I should be fine for now since the rain is out of our forcast. But I don't want to use them in the condition they are in. HELP???

Re: Windshield Wiper Issue

You need to observe the wiper motor. The older ones had an arm with a ball on it that turned the wiper blades. I'm almost sure something is bent or was broken. Sometimes you have to remove the plastic cover. With the power off check the arm at the motor the gear may be bad.
You can always go to a junk yard and buy used parts to repair this. A yard like U-Pull It has parts pullers who would do this type of repair for you if you can't do it yourself.

Re: Windshield Wiper Issue

Ya...my dad took a look at it today. He took the wiper arms off and we ran the wipers. And there was a lot of clunking. He ended up taking out the gear just above the motor and noticed that something was not doing its job. So he is going to play with it and see if he can't get it fixed. Thank you for your help.

Re: Windshield Wiper Issue

So far we think it is the wiper transmission. I had a loud clunk coming from it everytime I used the wipers. Its like a $50-$60 part through Kragen. I won't know for sure if that was the problem untill I get it installed. Ill let you know what I find out.

Yes. My problem was the wiper transmission. Luckily my dad was able to clean it and get it moving again so I did not have to buy a new one. You might also be able to find this part in a junkyard, but there is no guarantee that it will be any better than the one you have. I would say go new and be safe. Good Luck!
