CLutch??

1995 3000gt SL Manual...156K miles...
Cold weather in WI (-10 deg F for over a week)
I went to start the car on a cold morning and a medium pitched whining came from the master cylinder area.
The fluid in the reservoir is normal.

The problem is the clutch is not engaging very strong. It engages if I move the gears around and the try to "get in" at different speeds(using 2nd to start and then to 4th). Sometimes it is easier to get in to the gears and sometimes it is difficult to shift into 5th at moderate speeds(50mph). Pumping the clutch usually helps. (One evening, the car was grinding in most gears, and I pumped the clutch for +1 minute and it worked perfectly like butter afterwards....until the next day)

Does this sound like a clutch, or hydraulic problem? My guess is the clutch is on its way out.... My tranny seams good(never really grinds except for when the clutch misses)... Thanks for any input....

Re: CLutch??

edit button wouldnt work for some reason. but if your clutch was going out it just would slip when u start making power, so that dosent have much to do with the gears grinding, and by u saying u pump the clutch and then it works good, means u have air in the system.

Re: CLutch??

I replaced my clutch master and slave cylinder using the kits. I still have about half the normal pressure to operate the clutch. I can't get it to release. IT only travels about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. I bled the system thoroughly but it won't build enough pressure to operate efficiently.

I have a video of the slave pushing on the clutch arm--> does it look normal or abnormal????

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCXHtRbMXg8

Maybe the clutch is not working? The arm doesn't seem to have enough resistance. The squeak noise comes from the area by the arm.

Thanks for any help.

Re: CLutch??

To me it doesnt look like its moving far enough.

THe noise may be a slightly worn pressure plate.

Before you go ordering a clutch delete the clutch damper. Its that box on top of the trans that the soft line goes into before it goes to the slave.

That box can cause huge headaches when it comes to bleeding.

Re: CLutch??

I removed the clutch damper. One thing that might help other people doing this is that if you use the original line going into the slave, you don't have to cut and make a new flare.

Just rebend it and move the mount90 degrees cc and use one bolt to install the mount. I will post some pictures when I get a chance. This only took about 30 minutes to do.

This gave better pressure, but not great pressure.

95avenger- you hit the nail on the head. After setting the rod back all the way and setting the slave back to specs- it was like brand new. I will post a link that helped me do this.

Thanks for the help. Problem solved.
