My Alternator is Toast

'08 DOHC and MTX with only 75,000 mles and last week she started to give out a high pitched whine (off and on) I called it an electrical sound and I suspected the alternator was going. I never could catch it at a convenient spot to stop and put a volt meter on the battery, then yyesterday I had the rear window defroster on as well as the HVAC in defrost mode (AC clutch is engaged) and she did the whine and the battery light came on, being only about two miles from home, I turned off all systems, pulled over shut her down and restarted her and all was well. When I got home I did a volt meter on the battery trick and with engine off she read 12.0 VDC and when running 14.3 VDC, so I suspect the voltage regulator. I will change the alternator out after Christmas and see what happens. Waht do all of you think (I can buy a rebuilt alternator for $93.00 and at this mileage I cannot see replacing internal parts).

Re: My Alternator is Toast

I think you have this in the wrong section. There were no '08 DOHC neons produced.

Bad news is that the regulator is in the PCM

Re: My Alternator is Toast

Thanks for the reminder on the Voltage regulator, I should have known that. I was running the MOPAR performance PCM, so I switched back to the OEM PCM to try and isolate the voltage regulator as being bad, with OEM PCM installed she gives me about 13.5 VDC with all accessories off, and with AC, headlights, and stereo engaged she runs at 12.3 VDC, so I guess it is the alternator internal components thaty are bad.
