I've seen it light up on my dash...
It's not a bad thing; it's the ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) kicking in. If you've been driving on slippery surfaces (if you live in any of the states hit with the snow storms these past couple of days), then your car is just telling you that it's doing what it should be.
I'm not mecahnically inclined, but I think it works like this: In conjunction with your ABS (anti-lock braking system) the ASR receives a signal when a wheel begins moving faster than the other (aka slipping) and then provides more torque to the other, thus stabilizing the vehicle. It essentially prevents slipping on icy or wet roads.
