Red face 02 Trans??

Yesterday, I had been driving about 70mph for about an hour and then slowed to 60 and shortly thereafter slowed to 45. After slowing to 45 and beginning to stop for a light, the car suddenly felt like all four wheels had gone flat so I started working my way from left far left lane to right turn lane. Once I reached the right turn lane, the car stopped and did not want to go forward. It felt like the emergency brake came on hard. I did manage to limp it over to the shoulder and then could not get it to go forward. However, the transmission was engaging and attempting to move the car forward but the whole emergency brake thing finally stopped it. I found I could back up all I wanted with no vibrations, no noise, no jerking,..just backing as if nothing was wrong at all. Tried forward again and could not move.

Looking for an experienced guess. Does this sound like trans or some other part of drive axle. I had to get it towed to a dealership as it was freezing cold out and about 60 miles from home. I'm supposed to call them later this morning but just wanted to hear from the voices of experience. I have replaced both front axles about six months apart and all seemed fine but still had a bad "road noise" like a bearing or rear-end (even though I don't have a rear-end in this front wheel drive gtp).

Thanks for any opinions!

Re: 02 Trans??

It would help to post the mileage.

When was the last tranny service? You might consider doing a pan drop and see what is in the pan. What does it do when you manually try to shift gears starting out at D1.

Re: 02 Trans??

Nov. 7, 2007 was when changed trans fluid and filter. Actually, the trans gave no indication whatsoever until just before the car locked up. Back when I changed the fluid and filter, I only saw the few tiny metal flecks that I expected to see at 120,000 miles. Thanks for asking.

Re: 02 Trans??

Does it feel like trying to accellerate with a manual trans with the clutch enguaged? Sort of bogged down feeling?

Re: 02 Trans??

Actually, I found out that the right front brake caliper came loose and got caught up in the wheel. It's a wonder the whole dang right front wasn't ripped out. As it is, I've got to replace the knuckle as well and that's the expensive part.

Now I've gotta find out why the caliper came loose. Thanks!

Re: 02 Trans??

Better a knuckle that a tranny.

Maybe the bolts weren't torqued down correctly.

When was the last brake job done?
