Exclamation 03 rear end questions*****revised*****

ok i have a 03 silverado with some bolt ons and big tires ,etc, and beat the snot out of this truck and she loves it . i do happen to be mechanically inclined but am having a hard time identifying my rear end. I know how to determine gear ratio using productrion codes but what size posi unit with fit i belive its a 8.6 30 spline 10 bolt. does that sound right? ive repleaced my spider gears twice because i was strapped on cash about once a year . the second time i could see that the carrier was getting worn where the spider gear sits. i threw it together, knowing it would fail and four months later im hearing noises...... I want to just throw a posi unit in and keep my ring and pinion because they dont have a scratch on them. can any one give me links or ideas ive heard of auburn and eaton . i need cheap but a correct fit. all advise is deeply appreciated. i just need to know who to call and order one and the best price.

******UPDATE****** sorry it was late when i rwrote this and i dont think i got the correct point across. i have an 03 1500 ext cab 5.3 stepside bed with an open diff right now. as mentioned i replaced the spider gears. i want to buy a locker unit to throw in prob ebay or something and just need to find out if anyone knew what size and possibly good suggestions on where to get one

Re: 03 rear end questions

you most likely have the eaton locker....what I found was when you install a new rear diff of this type you must not drive the vehicle hard for the first 1,ooomi...as this is when the gear teeth will harden...then after this hardening process you then remove the rear cover and clean out the debris and install new gear fluid...

just yesterday I saw my friend who has the 03 2500 SIL...at 20,ooo mi the rear diff totally destroyed...only chunks come out..he towed a large trailer when new and did not know all this ...

on the internet you will get this info and you vin# will direct you to the correct diff parts....

since you are working this vehicle hard replace the fluids often...Unless you like to work/spend money on your vehicle.
