97 avenger m/t stuck in gear...shift linkage?

i was driving my 97 avenger with a 5spd m/t and i went to shift from 2nd to 3rd and the shifter just went straight forward towards 1st gear with almost no effort and wont move side to side like if it were in neutral it will only go to where 1st and 2nd gears would be but no matter where the shifter is positioned if i let off the clutch it is still in 2nd, is this a shift linkage problem? and if so does anybody know if that would be under the car or under the console under the shifter?
