Engine vibration at idle

My 01 Lesabre's engine vibrates at idle in Drive or reverse, I can feel it in the steering wheel, kind of like the same way the the 4 cyl. camry's and altima's tended to do, if you let go of the wheel at a traffic light you can see the steering wheel vibrating slightly. When accelerating it is smooth. Also, when putting in Neutral at the light it sometimes smooths out, other times it keeps vibrating. Anyone have the same problem?

Re: Engine vibration at idle

Take a look at your engine mounts and specifically the mount on the front of the trans. Had a similar problem and it was this mount ripped apart. Vibration went away as soon as I changed the mount.

You beat me to it.

My wifes Focus is in the shop due to a busted rear mount. Apparently the back end of the motor is sitting on the tranny and vibrates like hell when in gear.

My mechanic called me to tell me that in addition to the mount the plastic thermostat housing has a crack....again. and the water pump is leaking antifreeze. I told him to get it off the lift. That car has costed me too much money.

I'm going to look at a 2005 century tomorrow.

Re: Engine vibration at idle

Having the same problem minus the steering wheel vibration. Car sound unusually loud when the car is in gear but if you put ti in park or netraul it smooths out. I'll have to check that out.

Re: Engine vibration at idle

Raise the hood, start the engine and put it in drive with your left foot on the brake. Bring engine rpm up to about 1500 rpm, while watching for the engine to move (lift). If the engine lifts than 1/2 to 1", more than likely the mount is broken. Of course, if you have someone to help, let them watch the mount. It is hard to see if the mount broken by "looking" at the mount!

Re: Engine vibration at idle

i know mine is bad or broken, got to find someone to hold the brake and rev it so i can find which one it is, engine moves alot and i can feel the looseness when shifting up in the gears, at first i thought it was tranny shuddering but its actually engine and tranny moving around while up shifting, lol.

the front mount, is it all one assembly with shock attached to it?

Yes, it comes as one piece & cost about 70-bucks. It is a good idea to replace the front engine mount (front of water pump) at the same time. Be sure you get a lifetime warranty with both!
