Trouble starting and stalling

2004 grand prix gt -The other day i tried to start car and it would turn over, was cranking good, just couldnt start, got a boost though maybe low battery cuz cold out and it turned right away. Then next day same thing but it wasnt battery. I hear fuel pump sending and i installed a KnN airfilter during summer and broke one of the module clips on the processor, i have to make sure it is down so it will start haha, i think that was problem, now at stopped position while idling it stalled out on me, it is also making a weird whinning sound when i start it and it get louder when i step on gas...PLEASE HELP

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

If you can hear the whining in Park while revving, then I'd say the alternator. You need to put a fuel pressure gauge on the schrader valve to check the fuel pump. Could also be a fuel filter.

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

Why over think the starting and stalling? Your other post points directly to a CPS. Its not good to be driving around with a broken PCM connector. How did it break? Is it still able to make good connection? Maybe you should check this out and if it looks good then replace the Crank Position Sensor. Which by the way shoulndt run you any more than 50-60 bucks. Make sure you get an ac-delco replacement. It is an easy job thanks to our writup in tips and maintenance. The writup is for a series II 3800, but I dont think the series III is much different (if any).

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

Is the "whining" a "growl" caused by low power steering fluid?

If so, please check and refill if necessary...if it is truly low and it is allowed to growl for too long that condition will become permanent until you replace the pump.

rev2red,

Your two threads on what appears to be related issues have been merged together to cut down on confusion and possible redundant replies.

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

thank you all for help, and i broke one of the plastic clips while putting in a KnN gen lll intake, but the connection is still good! Could this cause a false signal to the sensors saying its the CPS when its only the processor clip?

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

Is the clip the plug that connects wiring to the PCM, or just a clip that secures the PCM to the car?

If its just a clip that secures the PCM, then chances are you need to replace the Crank Sensor.

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

its the clip that secures one of the 3 unites directly to the PCM, but all the prongs are in good condition and im thinking moisture maybe? but that wouldn't give the false reading would it bro?

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

yep its def. a PCM connection issue, everytime i can't start it, i pop the hood and wiggle one of the terminals and press down on it and it starts no problem, i still brought it in to mechanic to see if crank shaft position sensor was broken or debris build up or cover cracked or something just to be sure!

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

Is that Canadian or U.S. dollars. Obviously parts and labor in Canada is more expensive than in the U.S.

Is this one of the 80 pin electrical connectors located on the PCM module?

There should be two with 80 pins each.

I'd check EBAY first.

Re: Trouble starting and stalling

You have to be careful if it is the PCM module when shopping around for parts and there are other considerations with what might appear to be a simple replacement job. They are not plug and play in most cases. For one it must match his year Grand Prix which is 2004, the engine and all features/options supported. In other words unless it is from an exact same Grand Prix it must be programmed/re-programmed. The VIN number has to be programmed in.

The other option is just get a re-programmed performance PCM module from a U.S. supplier like ZZP, PFYC, etc. $99.00 (US). Some ship to Canada but there will be shipping costs and customs duties which will include getting the core back for the core deposit refund which is around $100.00 (US).
