02 Alero wont crank

So heres the deal. About a year and a half ago the car wouldnt crank at all and we had it towed to the dealership. The guy said it was some sensor in the steering column. He said it would cost 400 to replace. Then he hooked it up to the code reader and reset it and it started working again so he didnt charge anything. Not even to look at it which was pretty cool. So today it did the same thing while my girlfriend was at the grocery store and it had to be towed to our house. So my question is can I reset it myself or am i going to have to have it towed to the dealership? Do you think I can just unhook the battery to reset the computer? Also has anyone else had this problem? If so what was the result of this situation.

P.S. It's not the battery or the starter. The tow truck driver hit the starter with a hammer and jumped it with a screwdriver and the battery is fully charged. Its doing the exact same thing it did before.

Re: 02 Alero wont crank

Unless you have a good scan tool I doubt you can reset what ever it was. Disconnecting the battery doesnt realy work for much either but is worth a try.

It sounds like the brake trans shift interlock solenoid - BTSI might be your troubles.

ps - sorry for the delayed reply!
