noise when stopping
I own a 1996 windstar and when coming to a stop, I hear this noise. To describe it, it sounds as if you were to place something against a gear while it is still turning. It only happens when you get down around 10-5mph. So you have to be near the end of your stopping. I was thinking it might be something to do with the ABS, but not sure. The ABS light can come on when this happens, but not everytime. And the ABS light will not stay on. You can definitely feel the chatter in the brake peddle when it happens. So, any ideas????

Sound like you need to pull wheels off and inspect the brakes and all hardware. That hold it in place. To be honest it can be just about anything from a broken brake pad to loose hardware to front end problems.

yah it could be a shoe that has come loose in the rear drum brakes or one jammed brake cylinder in the drum so that only one show is being pushed into the drum instead of both pushing out evenly...you need to open up the brakes and have a look

You can clearly hear it coming from the front of the van, and not the back. Front brakes were just recently done, and the noise started proir to that.

So what did you find? If there is something loose around the front brakes, it could mess up something really bad if it cuts loose, with the abs sensor and its wiring being the most expensive. I take that back. Damaging the exciter-abs ring would be the most expensive as it conventially is not repairable, requiring the entire axle shaft to be replaced just for that little gear. Did you tell the mechanic that did the brakes to check into the problem? A pulsing brake pedal typically is caused by a bad rotor. Did he do anything to them? Maybe he should have and didn't, or he did and made them worse. Does the pedal pulsing only happen when the abs light comes on? That may indicate the abs module is creating the pulsing. Does the pedal pulsing coincide exactly with the pulsing sound you hear? Does the pedal pulsate and/or you hear it without the abs come on? That would tend to make me think the abs is reacting to something rather than be the cause of the problem. You should see if there is anything hitting the sensor or the excitor ring, which you should find on the axle between the black rubber boot and the back side of the brake/steering knuckle/splash shield/spindle assembly. See if the toothed ring has any imperfections or is loose, known causes of screwy abs light issues.
