I suggest you put some information up about your car. Did anything lead up to this? Have you had your battery tested? Have you had someone tap the starter while you tried cranking it?

I just bought it in may of 2008.Have not had anything tested. And I have not had anyone tap the stater while I tried to start it.This truck runs like a dream. No strange engine noise or anything.

I read in the info section on his truck that is has 204k.

I would start with cleaning up the terminals on the battery and the body grounds.

But it does sound like you have a classic dieing starter issue. (if 4x4 than you need to drop the exaust to get to the starter...)..

Re: 98 Rodeo 3.2 4x4

Any check engine lights? If so, have you gotten them read? Any recent maintenence? Drastic weather changes?

I'd start by cleaning your battery terminals. Go to a parts store that can check your battery and alternator while it's still on the car (the best test is on the bench though, removed from your car). When I got my V6 Rodeo Sport it wouldn't start every fifteenth time or so. I took out the starter and cleaned the internal contacts and exterior connection points. It was easy to get at since it's a 2wd. That was 8 months ago and no problems since.

I agree with the starter being bad, not uncommon. But check the terminals first to make sure they are clean and tight.

The big problem with starters on isuzus are the contacts. They can be replaced. But you need to take the starter out to do it which is a HUGE pain on 4x4 rodeos.

Re: 98 Rodeo 3.2 4x4

CLASSIC
starter problem. I'd bet pizza on it. The solenoid contacts wear out unevenly causing intermittent contact. The contacts can be replaced instead of dropping a load of dough on a new starter. Contact set costs about $15. Not just an Isuzu problem either. Any Denso starter is prone to this failure and that's the reason why 90% of them get replaced. Denso starters are used on a lot of vehicles.
