Thumping sound in front when coasting
Hi folks....got a 98 GC Laredo in which case I get a thumping feeling/noise when I am coasting...it stops when you brake, and/or accelerate...Am I looking at a cv joint or u-joint problem here?
Thanks in advance |

Re: Thumping sound in front when coasting
is it a metal sound or could your tire have a flat spot on it? a cv joint should make a real bad clicking sound when you turn the sterring wheel and if its that cv it most likley outer joint you could be hearing a upper bearing plate on strut also. first i would check tire.

Re: Thumping sound in front when coasting
Tires are fairly new with about 1,000 miles on them. I hear a faint chirp from the front drivers side(I think). But what is odd is that the shudder or thumping sound in the front end only occurs when it is coasting...if I press on the brakes, it goes away, if I press on the gas, it goes away. I am pretty certain I don't have a flat spot in any of my tires. and no problems turning with no noises per sei.

Re: Thumping sound in front when coasting
Is the thumping sound rapid or slow? Does it increase with vehicle speed? Engine speed?
If rapid and increases w/vehicle speed, I'd suspect the Ujoints, either on the axle or on the driveshaft. You didn't say how many miles you have on, but Ujoints can go 100k miles and be fine, or need replacement. If slow, it's tire/wheel related so I'd check both the brake calipers, the wheel lugs and the Ujoints on the front axles.
