wiper problems

I have a 2003 Silverado and the other day I turn the wipers on and on the return wipe they both stop momentarily then go to normal rest. This "stop" started in the middle of the down sweep, and progressively moved towered the rest position. This only happens on intermittent settings. With the wipers on normal or hi they run smooth. Any ideas.

Re: wiper problems

The only thing I found in the Service Bulletins is try cleaning the wiper insert with windshield washer fluid or a mild detergent & the windshield. See if this helps.

Re: wiper problems

The same thing is happening to my 03' Silvie. But it was about 11 degrees outside when it happened, I thought it was just the cold weather.

Re: wiper problems

Its not the cold(38-40 degrees)or the wiper rubbers. They, both arms, stop for a second and then continue. But only on a single wipe, such as intermittent or the mist wipe. When on, they do not do it. Is there a cam in the motor assembly that could be slipping?

I have never examined this years w/wiper motor...the others do have a cam/switch..I have seen this get damaged by leaving the w/wipers on..then when starting the vehicle when winshield is frozen the motor unit gets damaged..

this was the park switch internal to the motor assy..

Re: wiper problems

I have a similar problem with my '03 Silverado where both wipers seem to "chatter" on the down (left to right) stroke. It never seems to happen on the up (right to left) stroke. It had been occurring only on one of the intermittent settings and really seemed to be related only to cold weather as it did not happen all summer (I live in New England). Today (12/27/08), the wipers started chattering in the normal "on" position, although it wasn't consistent. The problem did not occur at all when on the high speed setting. BTW, I never leave the wipers on when I turn off the truck. Am I stuck with replacing the wiper motor?

this is not a motor problem but a w/shield contamination problem...clean the windshield with a cotton cloth that has some lacquer thinner in it and carefully wipe down the glass only...you do this until the cloth does not discolor...this will remove oil film....then coat the wiper blades with silicone spray...

this should work...if not then the wiper arm may need to be bent so as to correct the blade angle sweep...

the other method is to flip the blades.../get better blades...most today only last 1 year..
