1997 Camry 2.2 with major problems
My son has 1997 Camry with a 2.2 engine. It burnt a valve, and he had the motor rebuilt and it has not run right since. It idles very low, and the exhaust smells like a skunk !! It has since he got it fixed, every time you crank it, all you can smell is skunk. Last night, it broke down on the side of the road, and the header was glowing cherry red. Any one have any ideas? Thankls in advance !!

Re: 1997 Camry 2.2 with major problems
Has the "Check Engine" light come on indicating the ECM has stored codes? If so, get the codes read for a starting point.

Re: 1997 Camry 2.2 with major problems
If there's no codes check the ignition timing per the procedure in the factory service manual listed at the top of the forum. The timing belt may be a tooth or two off, advancing the timing too far and overheating the cat converter producing the smell.
