99 sl2 wont start
have a 99 SL2 that won't start. Have replaced the Temp Control Sensor and have replaced plugs. Hooked up diagnostic tool and that there were no "P" trouble codes.
Had coolant leak I believe from water pump and small oil leak. NEED HELP. |

Re: 99 sl2 wont start
1. Check for spark. If you do NOT have spark at the coil towers, then the CPS is bad. It is common for it to start/no start on its own with out warning. Follow this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUMGFnK29B8 (This may also be useful :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv6wqQAmXvc) 2. If possible remove the spark plugs. Take a look at them and see what they look like. its possible that since youve been running rich they are black and will not fire the spark very well. New NGK will do well. 3. Fuel. I highly doubt this is your issue, but ill list it anyway. Put the key in the RUN position and listen for a humm. It should last 2-3 seconds. This indicates your fuel pump is running. Next, there is a valve on the fuel rail. You can press it with a small scewdrive and fuel should shoot out (its supposed to be around 38-40 psi so watch your eyes). If a decent spray comes out (not a drip) then the fuel pump is working. Sending your injectors to:http://www.witchhunter.com/ is good as they give your before and after reports. 4. You say you have new plugs. What kind? NO fancy kinds. NGK Copper is what you want. Any copper plug will do though.

Re: 99 sl2 wont start
When I changed the plugs (did get the copper ones), one of the old ones did have oil on it. Is that a sign of a head gasket problem? Since the temp sensor was bad AND I believe the water pump is bad, could that have caused the head gasket to go?
Also, is the timing belt a possibility? |

Re: 99 sl2 wont start
Car uses a timing chain.
Oil can be from a leaky valve cover. Is there spark? A compression test will tell you if the head gasket is blwon or not. If you let the car over heat, this is a real possibility

Re: 99 sl2 wont start
If you have spark, you need to check the fuel pressure. Should be around 38 PSI when the key is in the RUN position before starting. It should stay constant after about 10 minutes.
You can rent a fuel pressure tester from AA/AZ, or buy one for x-mas from harbor freight. Heard they were having a sale on them actually. A compression check would also be very helpful.
