Help! How do you build your F1 rear wing?

Hey Everyone,

I am new to the forum and I just made the switch from 1/12 bikes to 1/20 F1 cars, and I am having immense difficulty coming up with a good way to build up the rear wing . I made a real mockery of my Tamiya Williams BMW rear wing, and ended up repainting it twice ….so to avoid the same issue a third time, please help! Do you guys use a jig to line up the parts? Do you paint first and then build, or do you build first, and then paint/mask? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Stuart

Re: Help! How do you build your F1 rear wing?

I paint the parts first. If I assembled it first, it would make for extremely difficult masking and inconsistent paint coverage, for example where the wing surface joins the endplate. Some Tamiya F1 kits, notably the McLaren MP4/7 and MP4/8 had one piece wings which were a complete nightmare. I usually attach all of the elements to one of the endplates with a small amount of slow curing CA, then apply the other endplate while the glue is semi dry. I then use the grid on my cutting mat to line up the parts, or I'll find a couple of books or solid objects and use those as sort of a jig. Its a bit tricky at first, but with a little practice you can usually obtain nearly perfect symmetry

I paint the elements first and then assemble using a sliding bar clamp. (xacto makes two different sizes) I'll start with the bottom element first and then work my way up. Snap the element into place without glue, then use thin super glue and let capillary action pull the glue into the joint.
