vacuume hose question!!!

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...dgasfdgsfd.jpg

this hose with the yellow line through it broke in half when i trying to take it off... the left end connects into the engine i believe under the spark plugs, i think its just a vacuum hose? anyway, is the car virtually useless unless i get a new one? or can i drive it until i get one without damaging the car? also, can i still at least turn the car on because im flushing my coolant right now and tryin to change the thermostat.

Re: vacuume hose question!!!

its 97 grand am. v6. 3.1L.

I havnt tried to start it yet, still tryin to get the stubborn thermostat house bolts off... i was just wondering if that hose is crucial to running the car, or not damaging anything if its off.

Re: vacuume hose question!!!

not sure if it is the EGR hose or not. If it is you can just plug it up and have no issues driving. It will throw a code when yo drive the car but the code should clear once you repair it.

Re: vacuume hose question!!!

That is a vacum line that runs to the rear valve cover. Its part of the PCV system actualy. Wont run for shit without it! Is it all cracked where the tape is ??

Might find a used one in a salvage yard cheap, I think it is a dealer part tho. It wouldnt hurt to call around at your local auto parts store.

ps- it might run without it, tho it will throw oil out the rear valve cover without it in place.

Re: vacuume hose question!!!

Yes that is part of the PCV system as XI said, your pcv sucks out bad engine vapors and sends them to intake to be burned again, and on the other side your engine must get clean air so it does not create vacuum in the system it will run perfectly fine without it. My suggestion find piece of rubber hose tha you can fit over both sides to connect them together.

except for the unmetered airflow... not to mention that it would suck in unfiltered air

Re: vacuume hose question!!!

Both holes would need to be covered. The case vent hole needs to be able to breathe, but I would plug the hole in the intake for sure, and rig up a temporary filter for the case vent. People do this as a mod so that the engine is only sucking in clean air. I dont think its legal, at least not if you get caught.

yes i should have told you to slip another vaccum hose to put them together.i told my next door neigbor done that on his s-10 and it worked unless you want to go to a salvage yard to get one.

yes i should have told you to slip a piece of vaccum hose over the yellow hose or go to salvage yard and see if you could find another one. but i'd try slipping hose over it first time because my neighbor come over and done same thing on his s-10 i told him to slip hose over it and it worked fine.

unmetered airflow = not correct because MAF is after the hole
unfiltered air = correct because the hole is after the air filter

the cheapest solution I probably did not word it correctly last time I said to find a rubber hose and slip over the two sides of the broken plastic line to connect them together in the middle.

Sorry to disappoint you 3100, but it would be unmetered and unfiltered air. The vent is after the filter and MAF sensor.

I would agree the rubber hose coupler works well and is a cheap easy fix.

It also looks like some work needs done to the front PCV.

There is not much suction going on at valve cover hole located above 5th cylinder that is like engine is running and you try to remove oil cap do you notice any rpm change like you created some big vacuum leak? I never did unless engine needs major overhaul and is blowing smoke there. The reason I said it is going to be metered is because if he leaves both holes open once the TB plate opens it will suck air coming from the air filter and from the hole where that plastic line was supposed to be connected and that hole is before MAF. So for his engine at idle MAF should read about 3-4g/s and with this opening maybe little more.

so since we are talking here about MAF I want you guys to know one cool trick how to figure out your max HP by just using good scanner that is able to read MAF's g/s. Connect the scanner set it to read MAF g/s live data take off from the stop by pressing your gas peddal to the flor the maximum g/s recorded will be very close to 80% of your max HP. So for example if you get maximum g/s reading as 80 then you know that you have 100 hp.

so here is the formula the number you get in g/s multiply by 100 and divide by 80

my bad I just realized that on his setup the hole is behind the MAF on mine those big rubber TB hoses are installed opposite in this order TB, short rubber hose MAF then longer rubber hose then air cleaner. Sorry

sorry guys again 3100
